The Rescue Unit was founded due to a need for emergency medical services to campus and the Chittenden County area. Since their service began, it has been a student-run organization that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Rescue Unit responds to approximately 2,200 calls annually to campus, the city of Winooski, the towns of Hinesburg and St. George, parts of Colchester, and the interstate.
Currently the unit has two ambulances, a 2016 Ford-450 as the primary truck, and a 2013 F-450 as the secondary ambulance. Both trucks are stocked with a full complement of basic and advanced life support supplies for airway management, trauma management, and IV therapy. The unit runs crews with Vermont licensed Advanced-EMT's in addition to EMT and CPR certified crew members. Routinely, crews respond to medical emergencies including respiratory, cardiac, diabetic; motor vehicle accidents, intra-hospital transports, and many other incidents. Student volunteers have the opportunity to train and become ambulance drivers or crew chiefs. Additionally, in April of 2014, the rescue unit began offering paramedic level care to the communities that they serve. This change in service level, represents the highest level of prehospital care available. Currently, the rescue unit has four paramedics on staff. Each year, the Rescue Unit sends representatives to the NCEMSF Conference. This past year (2022) at conference, Saint Michael's Rescue was awarded with the First Place Award for the Stryker ALS EMS Skills Classic Event in recognition of our ability to provide a high level of performance as advanced EMS providers in a team role for the members of our community. |
