TYPES OF MEMBERSHIP

  • Probationary member
  • Senior member
  • Charter member
  • Honorary member
  • Alumni member
  • Associate member

Prospective members must begin their career at SMFR with a semester-long rookie period, during which time they will learn the basics of their chosen unit and may observe but not run active duty. After this period they may be voted to Probationary membership, when they will officially become a member of the department.

PROBATIONARY MEMBER

A Probationary member is eligible for Senior membership at the conclusion of a four month active period, providing s/he has met the requirements for Senior membership of the respective unit. An individual cannot be a probationary member on both units at the same time.

SENIOR MEMBER

A Senior member is any member who has fulfilled the requirements for senior membership and has served a minimum of four months as a Probationary member and has received the confirmation of the voting membership of the respective unit. A senior member may hold an office.

CHARTER MEMBERS

Charter Members are those individuals who founded the department and were the first members in its earliest years.

HONORARY MEMBERS

An Honorary member is an individual who in the past has shown great concern for the Department and in recognition of his/her contribution is awarded honorary membership.

ALUMNI MEMBERS

An Alumni member is an individual who has graduated or left Saint Michael’s College in good standing and is still on or once again on the active roster.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

An Associate member is most often an individual who would like to be a part of the Department but does not wish to actively participate in firefighting or patient care who instead provides administrative and technical support.

IN AN EMERGENCY

In the event of an emergency, remain calm. Call 911 and be ready to provide a few important pieces of information:
  •  The address of the emergency.
  •  Exactly what happened.
  •  How many people are hurt.

Follow all of the dispatcher's instructions, and do not hang up until you have been told to do so.
